Desert WAVE Enjoys Victory in RoboSub 2019 with KVH Precision Sensors

Accurate underwater navigation is one of the greatest challenges facing autonomous platforms as GNSS isn’t an option in that environment. Desert WAVE, an all-female engineering team from Arizona State University, used a KVH high-performance gyro to provide accurate dead reckoning and was victorious in the U.S. competition.

This case study explores:

  • The challenges of autonomous navigation for subsea platforms
  • How autonomous underwater systems remain accurate and reliable without data from satellite-based navigation systems
  • How KVH’s DSP-1750 FOG was used to provide accurate, real-time heading and positioning data for Phoenix, Desert WAVE’s winning RoboSub entry
